How to Choose the Right BJJ Academy in Montreal

What Makes One BJJ Academy Better Than Another?

You signed up at the closest gym. The instructor seemed nice. Three months later, you're hurt, frustrated, and convinced jiu-jitsu isn't for you. Sound familiar? It happens every day across Montreal and Laval - and the problem was never BJJ. The problem was the academy.

Search "BJJ near me" right now and you'll get a dozen results. Some are world-class. Some are garage operations run by a blue belt with a YouTube education and a dream. The difference between those two will define whether you fall in love with this art or quit before spring is over.

This guide exists so you don't have to learn the hard way. Nine things to look for, the questions most people forget to ask, and the red flags that should send you running.

The 9 Things That Actually Matter

1. Instructor Credentials and Lineage

This is the single most important factor, and most beginners skip it entirely.

In BJJ, lineage matters. Unlike karate or taekwondo, where belt factories hand out black belts after a few years of forms, BJJ black belts are earned through a minimum of 8-12 years of consistent training and competition. Every legitimate black belt can trace their lineage back to the Gracie family or a handful of other founding families in Brazil.

What to verify:

  • What belt does the head instructor hold? A legitimate academy is led by at least a brown belt, ideally a black belt
  • Who promoted them? Ask this directly. Any real instructor will answer proudly
  • Are they registered with the IBJJF? The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation maintains records of legitimate belt holders
  • Do they have competitive experience? Not required, but instructors who've competed understand pressure and can prepare you better

At Gracie Laval, Professor Louis-Philippe holds a Black Belt with direct lineage through Renzo Gracie and Team OAMA - one of the most respected competition teams in Canada. Coach Mani brings a Judo Black Belt background, and Thomas has competed at the IBJJF World Championships. You won't find a coaching team with deeper credentials on the North Shore.

2. Facility Cleanliness

This sounds basic, but it's a dealbreaker. BJJ involves constant skin-to-skin contact on shared mats. A poorly maintained facility is a breeding ground for staph infections, ringworm, and other skin conditions that can sideline you for weeks.

When you visit, check:

  • Are the mats cleaned between every class? (Not once a day - between every class)
  • Does the facility smell clean or masked with air freshener?
  • Are the changing rooms and bathrooms maintained?
  • Is there a clear hygiene policy posted? (trimmed nails, clean gi, no training while sick)
A clean gym isn't a luxury - it's a baseline requirement. If you see dirty mats, that tells you everything about how they run things.

3. Class Variety and Schedule

Your life doesn't revolve around BJJ - yet. The academy's schedule needs to fit yours, not the other way around.

Look for:

  • Multiple class times per day (morning, lunch, evening)
  • Separate beginner and advanced classes - you don't want to be thrown in with competition-level purple belts on day one
  • Kids programs if you have children
  • No-Gi and Gi options - these are different styles and training both makes you more complete
  • Open mat times for extra practice

Check the Gracie Laval schedule - we offer classes throughout the week with dedicated time slots for all levels, kids programs starting at age 3, and both Gi and No-Gi training.

4. Community and Culture

You can have the best instructor in the world, but if the culture is toxic, you'll quit within a month.

The biggest predictor of whether someone stays in BJJ isn't their fitness level, their natural talent, or even the quality of instruction. It's whether they feel welcome.

During your trial class, pay attention to:

  • How do higher belts treat beginners? Do they help, or do they smash?
  • Is there ego on the mat? Watch how people roll. Controlled and technical, or aggressive and reckless?
  • Do people socialize after class? A healthy gym has people who genuinely like each other
  • How does the instructor handle new students? Are you guided, or thrown to the wolves?

With 151 five-star Google reviews, Gracie Laval's community speaks for itself. Our members consistently mention the welcoming atmosphere as the reason they stayed - not just the technique, but the people.

5. The Trial Class Experience

Never commit to an academy without trying a class first. Any legitimate gym will offer at least one free trial. If they demand a contract before you've stepped on the mat, that's a red flag the size of a billboard.

What a good trial experience looks like:

  • Someone greets you by name when you arrive
  • The instructor introduces you to the class
  • You're paired with an experienced training partner who goes easy
  • Nobody tries to submit you with full force
  • After class, someone checks in - "How did you feel? Any questions?"

At Gracie Laval, your first class is always free. We provide the Gi, walk you through everything, and pair you with a partner who knows how to make your first experience a good one.

6. Pricing Transparency

BJJ academies range from $80 to $250+ per month depending on location, instructor credentials, and what's included. Price alone doesn't indicate quality, but how a gym handles pricing tells you a lot.

Green flags:

  • Prices listed on the website or provided immediately when asked
  • Month-to-month options available
  • No hidden fees (testing fees, belt promotion fees, mandatory uniform purchases from only their store)
  • Family discounts if applicable

Red flags:

  • "Come in to discuss pricing" (translation: we use high-pressure sales tactics)
  • Long-term contracts with cancellation fees
  • Mandatory purchase of academy-branded gear at inflated prices
  • Belt promotion fees (your promotion is earned, not bought)

7. Location and Convenience

The best academy in the world means nothing if it takes you 45 minutes to get there in rush-hour traffic. You'll go for a few weeks, then the commute will kill your motivation.

For residents of Laval, the North Shore, and the 450 region, driving downtown to train doesn't make sense. You need an academy close enough that "I don't feel like driving" never becomes an excuse. Gracie Laval offers free parking and easy access from Autoroute 15 and Boulevard des Laurentides - no hunting for street parking, no paying $15 for a garage.

8. Competition Support

Not everyone wants to compete, and a good academy will never pressure you. But having the option is important. Competition is the fastest way to level up your game and test what you've learned under real pressure.

Ask:

  • Does the academy send students to local tournaments?
  • Is there a dedicated competition class or team?
  • Does the instructor corner students at events?
  • What tournaments do they attend? (IBJJF, NAGA, local circuits)

Thomas at Gracie Laval has competed at the IBJJF World Championships - our coaching team doesn't just teach competition strategy, they've lived it at the highest level.

9. Red Flags - When to Walk Away

Not every red flag is obvious. Some are subtle, and beginners miss them because they don't know what normal looks like. Here's what should concern you:

Cultish atmosphere:

  • The instructor demands to be called "Master" or discourages training elsewhere
  • Students are told they can't visit other gyms or attend open mats
  • There's an unhealthy reverence toward the instructor - more religious than respectful

High injury rates:

  • If multiple students have recent injuries, the culture probably encourages going too hard
  • Watch the sparring rounds: are people getting slammed? Are submissions applied slowly or cranked?

No sparring allowed:

  • Some schools only drill and never let you roll (spar). That's a sign the instructor can't control the room or doesn't actually know how to apply techniques live

Belt promotions for cash:

  • If you can pay to skip belts or there's a "testing fee" every few months, the belts are meaningless

No lineage or vague answers:

  • "I learned from various sources" is code for "I'm self-taught." Legitimate instructors name their teachers proudly.

The Comparison Trap

When you're visiting academies, your brain will naturally try to compare them. That's smart. But be careful about what you compare.

Don't compare:

  • Fancy amenities (a juice bar doesn't make the instruction better)
  • Social media following (marketing budget ≠ teaching quality)
  • Number of locations (franchise doesn't mean quality control)

Do compare:

  • How you felt after your trial class
  • Whether the instructor knew your name
  • The quality of answers when you asked questions
  • Whether you could see yourself coming back three times a week

Why North Shore Residents Choose Gracie Laval

We're biased, obviously. But here's what the data says:

  • 151 five-star Google reviews - not paid, not incentivized, just real students sharing their experience
  • Professor LP's Black Belt lineage traces directly through Renzo Gracie and Team OAMA
  • Coach Mani's Judo Black Belt adds a throwing and takedown dimension most BJJ-only gyms lack
  • Thomas's IBJJF Worlds experience means our competition students learn from someone who's been on the biggest stage
  • Free first class, free parking, no long-term contracts
  • Classes for kids (4+), teens, and adults - the whole family can train

We didn't build Gracie Laval to be the biggest academy in Montreal. We built it to be the one where people actually stay.
