Professor Louis-Philippe

Black Belt Under Renzo Gracie

Professor Louis-Philippe is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under the Renzo Gracie lineage and the founder of Renzo Gracie Laval Academy. His journey from military service to martial arts excellence has shaped a unique coaching philosophy that combines discipline, technical precision, and a deep passion for developing every student's potential.

  • BJJ Black Belt - Renzo Gracie lineage
  • Founder of Renzo Gracie Laval Academy
  • 15+ years of martial arts experience
  • Canadian Armed Forces veteran

From the Military to the Mats

Before finding his path in Jiu-Jitsu, Louis-Philippe served in the Royal 22e Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces from 2005 to 2009, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2007. The discipline, resilience, and leadership he developed in the military became the foundation of his martial arts career.

After his military service, Louis-Philippe pursued a career in MMA, compiling a record of 6-1 as an amateur and 1-1 as a professional. This competitive experience gave him an in-depth understanding of combat sports at the highest level.

A Natural Teacher

Louis-Philippe started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Bruno Fernandes in 2010. Within less than a year, he was already invited to teach - a rare distinction that speaks to his natural aptitude for instruction and understanding of the art.

He earned his Black Belt in 2015, and has since dedicated himself to growing the next generation of practitioners. His teaching style emphasizes strong fundamentals, positional understanding, and making complex techniques accessible to students of all levels.

Balance Between Mind and Body

Coach Louis-Philippe believes in the balance between mind and body. His coaching philosophy centers on building strong fundamentals while nurturing the joy of learning. He sees Jiu-Jitsu not just as a martial art, but as a vehicle for personal growth, mental resilience, and community building.

Every class at Renzo Gracie Laval reflects this vision: technical excellence delivered in a supportive, ego-free environment where every student - from white belt to black belt - can thrive.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi? +

Gi training uses a traditional kimono that allows grip-based techniques like collar chokes and sleeve controls. No-Gi uses rash guards and shorts, focusing on body locks, underhooks, and wrestling-based grappling. Both are taught at Gracie Laval and complement each other. See our adult programs →

How are belt promotions decided? +

Promotions are based on consistent attendance, technical growth, competition experience (optional), and attitude. There are no formal tests or fees. IBJJF requires minimum time at each belt (2 years at blue, 1.5 at purple, 1 at brown). Coach Louis-Philippe evaluates each student individually. See the full adult belt system →

Am I too old to start BJJ? +

No. IBJJF Master divisions start at age 30, and many of our members started in their 40s and 50s. BJJ is built on leverage and technique, not speed or strength. You train at your own pace.

Yes. White belts can compete in IBJJF and local tournaments. Our coaches will help you prepare when you are ready. Read our adult competition guide →

Do you offer a family discount? +

We offer flexible plans for families training together. Contact us to discuss options that fit your household. Many of our families have both parents and children enrolled. Contact us →

How do I enter my first competition? +

Tell Coach Louis-Philippe at least 6-8 weeks before the event. He will help you prepare mentally and technically. Register on ibjjf.com for IBJJF events. Read the full adult competition guide →
